About Joey

1998 began racing in a new car division at Las Vegas Motor Speedway referred to as the Bandolero Division. Bandoleros were manufactured and promoted by the 600 Racing, the same company that produces “Legend Cars" that have become so popular. For the 2001 season, Joey won both the state and track championships, finishing 1st locally and 1st in his division. On the national level, he competed against drivers from all over the country and placed 10th in his class.

For the 2002 and 2003 seasons, moved to the Legend Cars, competing in the Semi-Pro & Young Lions Divisions for drivers 12 to 16 years of age. For the freshman season, the emphasis was on developing talent, learning the car, and finishing as many races as possible. Experience was gained by racing at several different tracks in Nevada and California and while never winning a main event that year, won the Nevada State Young Lion Championship. Progressed in developing skills, racing his best while learning to be patient, consistent, and aggressive all at the same time. During the twenty-week 2003 schedule at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, racing his hardest also had to be accompanied by racing his smartest. While competing in 42 races, Joey finished 10th or better 37 times. He finished his sophomore season 4th locally out of 39 drivers, 3rd on a state basis, and 15th nationally out of 619 registered drivers.

For the 2004 and 2005 seasons, moved up to the ASA Speed Trucks. This regional touring series has helped develop talent, giving him experience and exposure at different tracks, and expanding his capabilities and experience. Completed the freshman season in ninth place overall, making all 17 starts, with 2 top fives and 8 top ten finishes. Achieving the goals set at the beginning of the season, Joey nurtured his driving ability and learned a lot about the equipment and the different tracks. The 2005 season saw a case of “sophomore blues", plagued with financial and mechanical problems Joey was only able to compete in 10 of the 14 races, with only 2 top ten finishes and managing to finish 17th overall out of 48 drivers.

Managed three asphalt-modified races in 2005. The first was in a borrowed car for the Fourth of July “Night of Fire" race at the Bullring at LVMS where he finished 6th out of 15 starters, squeezing a 6th place finish in the Speed Truck in California between Friday night practice and Sunday's race in Las Vegas. The second race was the Bullring's Fall Classic where Joey qualified 13th and finished 8th out of 44 drivers from several states that came to compete. This was accomplished in a modified that was only acquired two weeks prior and had never been on the track until that weekend's practice. The third race was later in November at I-10 Speedway in Blythe, California. After an incident with the wall in turn one during Friday night practice, spent Saturday morning repairing a badly damaged car in time for pre-race tech and practice and salvaged a top-ten finish out of the weekend.

2006 and 2007 IMCA modified season and Lucas Oil Modified Tour were fun successful seasons winning the Blyth I-10 track championship. 2008 and 2009 would be rough seasons with financial troubles, losing sponsors with the economy crash deciding to hang it up in 2010 and 2011, and racing random races for the next couple years. Decided 12 years later in 2023 to come back into racing with IMCA Sport mod, with Toste Racing with Sonny Wahl as the crew chief. Plans are to keep racing in the IMCA series as much as possible.
