Yuma’s Ebers makes good on victory lap pledge

    4/23/2016
By Randy Hoeft @YumaSunSports One way or another, Craig Ebers said he was taking a victory lap Saturday night at Cocopah Speedway. “We hadn’t finished a race in almost a year,” Ebers said, “and I told (race director) Lenna (Miller) before we started, ‘I don’t care if I’m last or first, I’m taking a victory lap.’” And he did exactly that. But then again it was expected as Ebers not only finished the IMCA Hobby Stock Division feature event, but led all 20 laps to get his first win of the 2016...more

James Dupre can sympathize with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs. While it seems like an eternity since the Indians and Cubs had been in the World Series, it had also been a long while since the Yuma driver visited victory lane at Cocopah Speedway. Dupre ended that drought Saturday night when he dominated the field on the way to winning his first IMCA Sport Modified Division feature event at the Somerton oval since March 2015. Dupre’s win came in Round 11 of the 2016 Cocopah Speedway...more

By Randy Hoeft @YumaSunSports Don’t mess with Texas. Not at Cocopah Speedway, anyway. Aaron Reutzel, from Clute, Texas, drove off with the win in the season finale of the 2016 Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series National Tour at Cocopah Speedway, while Sam Hafertepe Jr., from Sunnyvale, Texas, gave Reutzel all he could handle on the way to winning his first career series championship. “We wanted to win this race really bad, and you could see that in how hard we were racing, but Aaron is damn...more

If you were to poll the drivers assembled for this weekend’s seventh annual Turkey Classic at Cocopah Speedway, it’s doubtful you would find anyone more thankful than Yuma’s Joe Haines. After all, it was just over two years ago that Haines was injured in a freak accident at the track, and in the hours afterward was shocked to hear that due to the extend of the damage to his right elbow, most of the arm would have to be amputated. But Friday night Haines, with his right elbow totally...more

Randy Hoeft @ YumaSunSports immy Davy had to be told he won Saturday night’s IMCA Stock Car feature event at Cocopah Speedway. That’s because he never saw the checkered flag. “I saw a lot of fence, and then black sky and that was about it,” said Yuma's Davy about his trip across the finish line after a thrilling crash with Andrew Altenburg, from Truman, Minn., as the two raced each other for the win on the second night of the seventh annual Turkey Classic. The two collided after exiting Turn 4...more

By Randy Hoeft @YumaSunSports Dec 4, 2016 (0) Deja vu all over again? Close. For the second Saturday night in a row, the conclusion of an IMCA Stock Car Division main event at Cocopah Speedway featured an exciting race to the checkered flag. But this time there was no wild crash as there was during last week’s Turkey Classic. No, this time Yuma’s Manny Baldiviez edged Yuma’s Jimmy Davy by inches at the finish line to take Saturday night’s win in Round 12 of the 2016 Cocopah Speedway Racing...more

By: Randy Hoeft @YumaSunSports In 2016, Tom Dalen was excited to become Cocopah Speedway’s new general manager. Now he’s beside himself when talking about what the 2017 season has in store. The 2017 schedule kicks off Jan. 14 and includes, among other things, a longer Cocopah Speedway Racing Series season, a revamped Alexander Automotive Center IMCA Winter Nationals event and the crown jewel, an appearance by the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.     Missing, however, is a third...more

    11/9/2019
By Jackson Braun SOMERTON, Ariz. — After being on hiatus since 2012, the Wes Hurst Memorial returned in a big fashion over the weekend with the IMCA Modifieds at the Cocopah Speedway. The IMCA Modifieds had a highly competitive field both nights of action. 35 IMCA Modifieds checked in on Friday night, while 31 filled the pits on Saturday. Jason Beaulieu led the field to green on Friday night and got the jump on the field. The 30-lap main event was a contest from start to finish, as no racer...more
